Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia!

The Blue Ridge Parkway entrance is only thirty minutes from Smith Mountain Lake and makes for a wonderful day trip! You can use either the entrance on route 460 west to Roanoke or use the entrance located at the Peaks of Otter. See our MAPS for direction.

There are countless views that await you from the dive atop the Blue Ridge Parkway. Breathtaking scenery and recreational fun makes the Blue Ridge Parkway among the most popular destinations in the National Park System. "America's Favorite Drive" twist its way through some 469 miles of vista mountain views, and rolling meadows. Old time split-rail fences, farms and historical structures accent storybook views of majestic mountains and sleepy valleys.

The Parkway offers numerous recreational areas, some over 6,100 acres. They offer picnic areas, visitor centers, camp grounds, hiking trails and, in most instances offer concessionaire operated facilities.

You do not have to be at an overlook to stop and enjoy the scenery. Unless otherwise posted, parking is permitted along road shoulders. Choose a place where you can pull your car completely off the road so as not to endanger yourself or others. Be alert for wildlife. Deer and other animals may dart in front of you, especially around twilight!

You can even get off the parkway and drop down to visit The Natural Bridge, Virginia. Be sure to allow yourself at least 90 minutes to get back to the lake, you'll be glad you did.

At higher elevations, trees grow short and gnarly looking.

The Parkway incorporates several recreation areas, some exceeding 6,000 acres. These parks within the Parkway have visitor centers, camp grounds, picnic areas, trails and, in many instances, concessionaire-operated lodges, restaurants, gas stations and other facilities.
